Healthcare Center For Women Cancer Patients
A diagnosis of cancer invariably brings thoughts of mortality to the forefront of patients’ minds and may be associated with stigma, social isolation, and personal stressors. The project is to design healthcare center for women cancer patients at 56, Jalan Profesor Diraja Ungku Aziz, Seksyen 12, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor aims to be a place where they come to get better, relax and get knowledge about cancer. Presented by National Cancer Society of Malaysia, the building offers a range of physical activities and counselling service. The demand was clear and simple: to create a healthcare center which is more like a home and less like a hospital.
Concept Statement - Unlimited Liberty
There’s no way to know how long anyone will live - with or without cancer. The concept of this project ‘unlimited liberty’ describes that cancer patients are possible to live as normal person and having infinite future. The concept is inspired from the cancer ribbon which is a sign of support for those living with all types of cancer. As freedom is unlimited, unrolling the ribbons represent that patients can think themselves away from cancer in the building. The design creates a new space for women who affected by cancer to share their thoughts and feelings with others who are in similar situation. Talking with loved ones, trusted friends or a faith-based counselor may help.
Communal Dining / Centre Courtyard .
A social gathering space and heart of the building to encourage interactions between people, with a healthy eating cafe and dining tables and chairs provided. It is fully lit up with natural daylighting and ventilation from the skylight which located on the rooftop level. As a public area for all the users in the building as well as the outsider, this area is designed incorporating with natural elements such as trees, stone and water features, to create a comfortable and cozy abode for the users. An open kitchen and coffee bar counter is also proposed to offer cooking class for patients to learn to make some healthy food.
Reception .
An double volume reception lobby right after the entrance on level ground floor. Visitors may make the registration and get the access cards for entering the activities rooms or bedrooms from the reception counter.
Therapeutic Gardening Area .
Located on lower ground floor, the gardening area offer gardening class for patients. It provides a garden retreat, a space for people to gather, to work with their hands and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of nature and the outdoors.
Yoga Room .
Since yoga can complement cancer-fighting medical treatment to help heal the body, mind, and spirit in the midst of the cancer battle, a yoga room is proposed on the lower ground floor. Designed with a large glass window, it always allow natural light to flood into the room and bring the users closer to the outdoor landscape.
Art Studio .
As art can help with healing, an art studio is proposed on the level ground floor by providing some artistic activities including painting, sculpture and drawing. Through art therapy, it helps patients to explore and express difficult thoughts and feelings. Besides expressing the emotions in drawings, patients are able to have communications among each other and meet real new friends who have in similar situation.
Chemotherapy Room .
Located next to the art studio, chemotherapy room is an area where patients receive cancer medication. As patients who are administered chemotherapy may takes long hours sitting in the chair in the room, the chemotherapy room is designed comfortable with soft materials and lighting as well as benches for families so they can always accompany with the patients.
Counseling & Consultation Room .
A private room for counselors and doctors talk to or examines patients. There are two counseling and consultation rooms proposed next to the reception lobby to provide patients and doctors with space to talk about diagnoses and treatments. Visitors are able to make appointments with the counselors before visiting the center to know more about the healthcare center.
Lounge .
Lounge area works as a space for discussion and waiting area to the first floor. With some lounge chairs, sofa and coffee tables, this is a public space for people to take a rest, relax or waiting for someone.
Private Spa .
A relaxing spa can help to destress and calm people’s mind. Patients are able to spend time in the hot tub in the spa room on rooftop level. The soothing effect of the warm water and massaging action may help relieve physical, emotional, and mental stress. Hence, it is benefits for patients’ physical and mental wellbeing.
Rooftop Garden .
Occupied 50% out of the overall floor, the rooftop garden is proposed to allow occupants to get a fresh air, contact with nature as well as provide great insulation and keep temperatures cool for the building. It is a chillax area that people can have their coffee break or chit chatting while enjoy with the surrounding view.
