Chasm
Hi everyone, here is my graduation project and some smaller projects I've worked on during my formation at Artside School !
Chasm
Chasm is a milestone project I started at Artside School.
We had to come up with various types of concepts for a video game.
Chasm take place in a dark fantasy world, it starts in a victorian inspired city on the edge of a huge pit whose bottom cannot be seen. The people from the city have learned a few things from the Chasm : the use of some materials or some knowledges about mechanics and transhumanism learned from an ancient civilization living deep in the Chasm.
In this city, even though people are living thanks to the Chasm, Many would rather stay away from it. Many but not the explorers, whether out of curiosity or whatever other reason these peoples can't stay away from it too long. Let's have our first jump with one of them !
Part 1: The first exploration
Let's start with Silas, our main character for this game.
I designed him has a young and curious explorer looking forward for his first "jump" into the Chasm.
Ethel is Silas's Master, she has come back from a lot of jump into the Chasm and has some reputation among the explorers.
I wanted to design her has a daunting but careful master.
Next part is the city and the research related to it.
I tried different mood before coming up with this one that fitted my idea of it pretty well, I also thought about how the city could function with the workers, how the peoples from above could communicate with the explorers or how they would go down into the Chasm.
Ingame all of the part 1 would be seen only has cinematic flashback.
...and what a memory to think about but your first jump into the Chasm?
There is a memory that Silas doesn't remember and finds out during an encounter with a mystical merchant into the Chasm.
The first time he met a glimmeris centipede, (a centipede feeding off of a pink parasite/plant) and also the last time he saw his master.
Almira is a merchant living deep in the Chasm.
She is from an ancient civilization that knew how to tam the Chasm and survived thanks to all the changes made to her body, her hairs are made of glimmeris, which attract centipedes to keep her company.
During a jump into the Chasm, Silas and Ethel fell on a floor deeper than expected, they were attacked by a giant centipede. Silas' arm was cut off during the fight, giving Ethel time to defeat the creature.
While trying to find a way up to save her apprentice, Ethel found Almira surrounded by smaller centipedes. They made a deal, Almira had to heal Silas's wound with her ancient knowledge, in exchange Ethel had to go into the abyss to find something for her after bringing Silas to the surface.
Part 2: The awakening
He did not remember anything about what happened during his last jump into the Chasm but he knew one thing, his master was still down there and he had to find her.
Here is Silas, how you would play him ingame, years later as a more experienced explorer.
I wanted him to look determined have useful and upgradable gear to vary the gameplay options.
Next we have the early props explorations for some Chasm biomes followed by sketches of the environments using these props.
As you would expect it, into the Chasm and with all those biomes there can be a lot of strange creatures insides.
During the research I was thinking about which biome they could live in and how this would affect their designs.
The Chasm is still full of mysteries, no one really knows how deep it goes, but the deepest place known yet is the abyss. A floor where you can't see anything and that asks a lot of preparation. Before going there due to the huge amount of glimmeris that could parasite their bodies, explorers must equip themselves with powerful light sources and protection against the plant.
During his exploration Sylas meet Almira once again, she tells him everything he forgot about their last encounter and the tasks that she gave to her master: "she had to go into the abyss to find the heart of a giant centipede"
Silas's objective was now clear, go to the abyss and find out what happened to his master
But..
I wanted to have a boss that would bring emotion to the player, changing the master while keeping a part of humanity to the character.
That's it for Chasm, for now at least..
Huge thanks to the Artside teachers for all the feedbacks on this project !
Special thanks to Guillaume Normand for the extra feedbacks on this as well !

Special agent squad
This is a small project I started at school with one of the characters, but I decided to push it further and practice character design in the art style of Valorant. So here is a duo of special agents able to perform in a wide variety of missions.
Surtr
Surtr is a concept done for Arthur Fournier for his graduation project in Character art at Artside School.
He came to me with this Idea of doing our version of Surtr the fire giant.
Huge thanks to all of the Artside teachers for their classes and feedbacks on most of these projects
Thank you for watching until the end, hope you enjoyed it !!
