Rookie Awards - Lucas Ribeiro - 2D Animation
This is my entry for the Rookie Awards in 2D Animation.
Introduction
Welcome to my entry for the Rookie Awards in 2D Animation. Here you will find a few projects - short animations - I did on my own initiative to improve my tradigital (and cutout) animation skills. You will also find one animation I did as part of an assignment from the 2D animation course at CG Spectrum, as well as my demo reel. All of this animations were made using Toon Boom Harmony.
Dialogue Scene
This is a scene of dialogue with two characters. I made this animation basing it exclusively on the audio, which I took from the movie Comedy of Terrors. The characters are based on Warner Bros. characters, both appearing for the first time in the original Looney Tunes, portraying the evil scientist that created Gossamer (each in their own cartoon, both direted by Chuck Jones). One of them, Dr. Lorre - a caricature of the actor Peter Lorre - is portrayed here as a ghost for no particular reason other than the fact that I wouldn't have this finished on time if I were to vectorize and color that character for every drawing.
Rough Keys
The first thing I did for this animation was create a simple stage with a foreground element. I created rough key drawings for one of the characters. Then, I did the same for the other character.
Tied Down Animation
I finished the rough animation, adding breakdowns and inbetweens. Then, I tied it down, adding mouth shapes for the lip sync.
Clean up
After that, I added a new vector layer for the foregorund elements as well as for each of the characters and cleaned the tied animation using pencil lines. For the colored character, I converted the line art into color art and then added color to it. As for the other character, I added a glow node to the line art. Finaly, I made a simple smoke/vapour animation that comes out of the test tube. And that's how it looked like before the camera moves:
Creatures
This section is devoted to animation of monsters, including two cutout animations and one pencil test of a zombie.
CG Spectrum monologue assignment
As part of the 2D animation course I attended at CG Spectrum in 2021, I had to animate a character giving a monologue. I used the audio from a movie called The House on Haunted Hill and animated the scene based solely on that audio with my own character.
This is how the look of the shot evolved:
End
Thank you for the time allocated to the analysis of this entry. With the exception of the "monologue assignment", all of the animations exhibited here were created between early February and early May of the present year.
Here goes my demo reel as a summary of what you have seen in this entry.
