My late journey as a concept artist

Martin Simon Diethelm Varela
by McBork on 24 May 2022 for Rookie Awards 2022

My name is Martin Diethelm and I'm from Chile. Until very recently my skillset was limited to cel-shading stylized cartoons. I want to use this opportunity to showcase this learning part of my journey through art school. I can't wait to see what the future me will be able to paint!

Rogue Agent Lena

Character design for a video game set in a sci-fi distant planet in the far future.

First version of the complete bodysuit. Lots of things were changed later on as there were design elements that were unclear to the viewer.

Wild Warrior Ritsuka

An illustration based off characters that I've been drawing and improving since
I was a kid.

The poacher, cornered. The only way to escape is past her. The distorted perspective works in a somewhat bizarre way to make the character look intimidating even tough she is just standing there, motionless.

The knight, the villain
and the dragon

A set of 3 characters designed to be set in a dark fantasy "souls-like" medieval world

The valiant Dragon Knight, sent forth on a quest to save the primordial progenitors of the world and masters of his noble order, the ancient dragons.

The zealous Adjudicator. Pursuing heretics in the name of his holy order, this "servant of justice" will stop at nothing to eradicate the order of dragons and establish a new world order under his holy deity

The Wendigo Dragon. A once proud, beautiful creature now cursed and left to wither and rot by a new "holy" order who claims dragons to be a horrible demon of nature. All hope lies within the dragon knight to restore these majestic beasts to their glory

The Fishmonger

Contest entry for a character design set in a horror themed 2D fighter game based off the works of H.R Giger and Scorn

A small comparison

Present day vs only a few weeks after joining art school.
