Cormorant Fisherman
Hi everyone! Here is my entry for this year's Rookie Awards - a character I worked on during one of my courses in the Game Artist program at Futuregames, Sweden. The character was made after a concept by Juan Diego Leon (https://www.artstation.com/juandiegoleon).
During my second term at the Game Artist program at Futuregames, we went through the workflow of creating a game-ready character over a month-long character art course, taught by Gabriel Forsén. For the assignment, I decided to recreate a character designed by concept artist Juan Diego Leon titled Cormorant Fisherman.
I was particularly drawn to the colour palette and the stylisation of the character, and wanted to try and recreate that in 3D. The character was sculpted in ZBrush, retopologised in Maya, textured in Adobe Substance 3D Painter, and rigged, posed, and rendered in Blender 3.1. This was my first time going through the full character workflow, and it was a lot of fun! Special credit and many thanks go out to my classmate Thor Aiff, who made the rig for this character.
I learned a lot during the process of making this character and picked up many things that I will take with me into future projects. Even now, I see many points I think I could improve upon if I ever were to revisit this character, but it's time for me to let this old fisherman go now. All in all, I'm quite pleased with how this project turned out!
The original concept by Juan Diego Leon, whose wonderful work can be found on ArtStation and Instagram. Make sure to check it out!
