Good Goodbye
Good Goodbye is a solo student thesis CG short film made by Jiacong Gu from SVA Computer Art.
This is my solo animated short thesis film, Good Goodbye. The whole production process took me almost a year and a half.
It is a film made for my family and in memory of my grandpa. There are so many unspoken words that I wish I have told him. So I took this chance and put them here in this film.
My goal was to experiment with non-photorealistic rendering , and to create 2D illustrated-looks out of 3D animation production in order to develop new possibilities of 3D animation. I chose to do NPBR style because I always love illustrating and reading illustrated books. I love the drawing style with rough outline, sketches and rich texture. The specific look I developed is inspired by Shaun Tan’s illustrated novel The Arrival which I have always loved since childhood.
Director's Treatment
This thesis film is designed to be melancholy but warm at the same time. Various camera moves are used to present fluent and abstract transitions in sets, as well as in the main character’s emotions. I also tried out different rendering techniques to get render outcomes in a variety of styles, so that the different status of the main character’s emotions could be better expressed. This film is very audio-driven as well. Together with the music and sound effect, I want to create a warm, emotional, and surreal atmosphere, as well as an illustrated-book-reading-like experience for the audience.
