Hello and welcome to my portfolio! I'm Marly and I'm a third-year student at SCAD majoring in Motion Media and minoring in Illustration for Entertainment. My work is very playful, illustrative, and utilizes a wide range of techniques - often mixed together. Enjoy!

Featured Works

Peace Tea Logo Resolve

Sound by Matheo Quevedo

Process

Research
Peace Tea created a new logo in their brand refresh in 2017. Their main branding objectives were to better communicate “refreshing tea flavor,” distinguish between flavors, reinforce their brand core values (Peace, Love, and Happiness), appeal to millennials & Gen Z, and establish relevancy against their main competitor, Arizona Tea.

Concept
I focused on accomplishing Peace Tea’s main objectives from their recent brand refresh to create a fun, illustrative logo resolve that would communicate “refreshing tea flavor” and appeal to a younger audience. My idea was to use the hand from the logo to hold each flavor and then transition to the peace sign.

Animation
I cel-animated the hand using photo references of my own hand. Then, everything was composited in After Effects. See the process for one frame below.

Love Letter (1995) Title Sequence

Process

This was a collaborative project between Nicole Lin, Yorlie Avila, Emily Castro, and me.

Concept
Love Letter (1995) is a Japanese romantic movie in which a woman writes a love letter to her late fiancé. We wanted to portray various themes from the film using the medium of origami. A big focus was paying homage to the beautiful snowy, mountainous landscape where the movie takes place.

Animation
After constructing the origami, we took the stop motion photos using a setup of duct-taped phones and desk lights on boxes in my room. These photos were then composited and edited in After Effects.

Outlander Main Titles

Process

Concept
Claire Randall lives in two worlds: one in the 20th century with her husband Frank, and another in 18th century Scotland with Jamie. Her two lives are similar yet distinctly different (there is always romance, war, and healing) but different love interests, different wars, different medicine, in a completely different time. This concept portrays each time period that Claire lives in as a reflection of the other as almost the same. The differences in the nearly equal reflections provide contrast that highlights how the two worlds are literally worlds apart.

Style Inspiration
Scottish landscape paintings from the mid 18th century (the time and place in which most of the show takes place) by artists Jacob More, Alexander Runciman, and Alexander Nasmyth had the perfect mystical feeling that I wanted to replicate.

Styleframes
The watercolor “look” as seen below is done all digitally, in Procreate.

I also created assets for a show package. (In order: Netflix Banners, Bug, Mortise, and Full Frame Slate)

Doodle Removal

Sound by Matheo Quevedo

Process

This was my final project for Intro to 3D Motion Graphics in which I learned Cinema 4D for the first time.

Concept
A girl is doodling when suddenly, the doodles pop out and become 3D. The girl, just like her original doodles, is a very simple, two-dimensional design which creates even more of a surprising contrast when the doodles pop out of her sketchbook.

Animation
The 3D animation was done in C4D. The 2D animation was mostly done in After Effects (a few cel animation moments were created using Procreate) and then everything was composited in After Effects.
I really enjoyed the modeling stage of 3D animation. Here are some process pictures of the modeling of the doodles:

CoMotion 2022 Waves Forming Animation

I was an animator on the branding team for SCAD's CoMotion 2022, and this was the section of the title sequence I was assigned. I was given these three style frames designed by Tiffany Lo:

Motion Tests and Fun

The Illustration (by Georges) for this stomping guy was something I came across on Instagram. I loved the groovy illustration style and could picture him in movement so I went ahead and gave him some life! This was done in Procreate.

This chair was inspired by an Instagram post by Hobbes which showed the behind-the-scenes of their animation. I could tell that the chair was made with 2D shapes but somehow moved in a 3D way so I wanted to try to figure out how it was done. Eventually, I figured it out (using JavaScript of course!) then I made my own version and made it pretty.

Playing around with Javascript expressions and Essential Graphics in After Effects. This is something I did just for fun to see if I could.

Illustrations

"King Crab"
Created using Photoshop and Procreate

The prompt I was given was "unlikely hero," so I thought it would be fun to have a crab protecting a sand castle from a boy who it trying to squish it!

"Baking Girl"
Created using Illustrator

This was a class project in which I had to create a self-portrait using Adobe Illustrator. I have created so many self-portraits over the years (probably too many!) so I just wanted to have fun with this one and portray a hobby that I enjoy.

"Cozy Bookstore Bakery"
Created using Procreate

This illustration was my first project in Illustration: Anatomy and Perspective. The prompt was to use perspective to create an interior space so I created a space that I'd enjoy chilling in.
