Inclusive Design
Organic Farming Community Centre
The project is to design a sustainable urban organic farming community centre & eatery with a total area of 10,000 square feet, located at 56, Jalan University 46200 Peta ling Jaya in Malaysia. It is a collaboration between Malaysia Green Building Council (GBC) and Urban Hijau, named Go Green : Farm To Table. The centre aims to provide urban sustainability in food production that are closer to where people lives in Malaysia.
It estimated that almost 58% of the citizens in Malaysia live in urban areas according to FFTC Agricultural Policy Platform in 2014, far from the reaches of farmland, making access and the transport of fresh food on everyday struggle in terms of cost, labour, unpredicable weather conditions. Modern cities are suffering from urban saturation, city life can be unsustainable and unhealthy to some people due to pollution, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Producing local organic food and reconnecting the existing architecture with nature in big cities is a basic need for residents but also for the environment.
In the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown two-year anniversary, Malaysians have really realised the importance of securing global, regional and especially the local food supply chain. If another pandemic impacts the transport or import of food, they will still be able to access healthy food. A seed bank will be established as a focal point for organic farmers, kitchen gardeners to exchange local seeds and forge solidarity. The centre serves as a working model of a learnig centre for ecological sustainable living for the local community. Thus, bring opportunity to learn about ecological farming practices and even grow their own vegetables and fruits to increase their sense of belonging. The projects also encourages the concept of aquaponic and hydroponic system which also well suited to modern society with high-quality and safe produce that are environmentally friendly.
NSIDE OUT
The concept of turning the space inside out has the users surround the vegetations, thus huge openings, views, ventilation, visual dialogue can be exchanged between inside and outside. It will be an entirely new kind of community centre where food, knowledge and experience meet, a reliable place to engage with other people. It is a source of joy and inspiration and provides us with the resources we need in our everyday lives. Crafting a park on the top of the roof to provide a visual connection to the existing vegetation on the ground floor plane, which allows a different perspective to the city, and one that shares the excitement of green spaces. Heating will only be provided at floor levels with energy efficient heat system. Cross ventilation will enhance the indoor air quality, with interior vegetation to purify the air and remove carbon dioxide produced by the users. The double glazed curtain walls insulate the building at the same time allows natural light to flush the interior, providing comfortable light level. The planted green roof would make available stepping stone for eco paths and act as insulation layer for the building envelope. It is not only a functional community centre, but a sustainable prototype civic architecture that could lead a zero carbon way for our coming generations.
