Fading Memories VR

Fading Memories VR is a Meditative Virtual Reality Experience which bring you on a journey through Bukit Brown Cemetery, a cemetery that is located in Singapore. The cemetery was opened for burial from 1922 to 1973, closed when the government favoured cremation over burial. The cemetery today is about to be lost due to future redevelopment plans planned for the ground, and graves are now slowly being exhumed, that's why Fading Memories VR was made.

Experience

Fading Memories VR is educational, not a lot of action happens in other Virtual Reality games. In this experience, you play as this man who received an exhumation letter to exhume his late grandfather who was buried at the cemetery, and upon receiving this exhumation letter, he proceeds to the cemetery to pay him a visit. On the way to his grandfather's grave at the cemetery, he sees the graves of famous people who were buried there and he recalls facts that he learned about them. He also recalls facts he learnt about the cemetery in the past.

Interactions

This virtual reality experience was made to be used on the HTC Vive. You use the trigger buttons on the controller to interact with any button you can find in the experience. The facts you recall come in the form of a monologue the main character thinks to himself, but the player hears it as audio. This was made this way because it seemed like a more natural way to blend the user with the character, so that the user can feel more immersed in the story, as if he or she is really the main character in the cemetery.

Environment

The environment was made on Unity (Lighting and Environmental Elements) and the 3D models were made on Blender (Graves and gates of the cemetery). The idea of allowing as authentic an experience as possible stuck throughout the entire project, and thus the environment and its elements were designed with idea of getting as close to the real-life environment as possible.
