Thomas Hall - Rookie Awards 2021
For this contest, I have created a baby elephant jungle-esque statue. This is my first solo project, having only just finished a foundation VFX course only 3 months ago! It has been a massive learning curve but I am very proud of the result! Thanks for having a look and any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
I decided to start a new project for this contest. Starting for me is usually the worst part - trying to find some inspiration that's also interesting and unique to work on, but also not too advanced that I'm defeated before I begin or too simple that there is nothing to learn from either! Therefore I put myself in the hands of fate and used a random image generator to choose 2 to 3 images to base this project on. Thankfully fate's online counterpart was kind and gave me a picture as a family of elephants, followed by a picture of a statue bust and hence the goal to make a photo-realistic baby elephant statue was born.
Starting from several reference images, I created an approximate mesh for the elephant, which would then be finetuned in Zbrush at greater detail. I also rigged the mesh to be able to pose the elephant differently to fit the statuesque look. I also intend to use this rig to animate the statue in a future continuation of this project. The mesh was then texture in Substance Painter and brought back in to Maya to be rendered.
I am pleased with the result, especially the look of the moss on the statue. It is my aim to continue this project and learn through camera tracking the mesh within an outdoor jungle scene and further fine tune the photo realism by imbedding the mesh successfully. I plan also to use the rig to create animate the elephant statue for that fantasy jungle style feel, so stay tuned! Thanks for checking out my project! Please let me know any feedback too!
