Simple Wash Laundromat

by tamaravega142 on 1 Jun 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

Simple Wash was a laundromat inspired from a local laundromat in Savannah Georgia. Through mask mandates and max occupancy signs, the last year has been spent trying to keep one another safe from a deadly virus. Simple Wash showcases a business that was forced to shut down indefinitely due to low foot traffic.

SIMPLE WASH LAUNDROMAT

SCENE BREAKDOWN:

REFERENCES:

The first stage of this project consisted of gathering a multitude of references for the scene. I traveled to a variety of local laundromats and took detailed pictures of the area. Many of the laundromats I visited had a large layout, but I knew I wanted to tell this story with a smaller, family-owned laundromat. After gathering all my references, I focused on the asset list and the modular pieces I would need to create for the laundromat.

CREATING THE ENVIRONMENT:

Once gathering an understanding of scale and the environment, I started to block out the scene in Maya before moving all assets to Unreal Engine. Most of the pieces in the environment were modular which allowed for efficient population of the scene.

Through post processing I created an ominous environment through the color gradation of the scene. I also used slight exponential height fog to give the illusion of dust in the distance of the scene.

Simple Wash was my first interior environment I have created, and it came with some difficulties along the way. The most challenging part of this project was creating interior lighting. Although I still have a long way to go, I did extensive research on interior lighting and the effects the lights have on Unreal Engine. Through trial and error, I decided to use lights with low intensity and volumetric scattering to enhance my scene.

HERO ASSET TEXTURE MAP

The ceiling fan was my hero asset for this project due to the modularity of the other objects in my scene. Although not very large, this hero asset helps centralize the scene by being in the middle of the environment.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED:

Through this process I grew and developed as an artist. Simple Wash allowed me to expand my creative process and allowed me fully develop a scene from start to finish. With the knowledge I have gained from the first interior space I have created, I look forward to growing and creating more work that can showcase my abilities in the future!
