ELINE OPPEWAL // 3D GENERALIST

During my studies at the Netherlands Film Academy I have developed myself as a versatile visual effects artist and supervisor who is always curious and on the lookout for new unique looks and styles within the art of 3D animation and visual effects. I specialise in modelling, texturing and lighting, with my main focus on the last two. With texturing and lighting I feel as if I am bringing the film to life and that I can put my own personal touch to it.  Over the last four years, I have done a lot of different types of work. I gathered my best work in one, compact showreel, for you to enjoy! Some of my favourite works are highlighted below.

LONGING ('VERLANGEN')

My main graduation project was the short animation film Longing (Dutch: Verlangen) which I supervised together with a good friend and classmate (and also fellow Rookie Contender). I was mainly responsible for the 3D aspect of the film, while his main field was 2D and compositing. The film is also participating in the Film of The Year competition here at the Rookies. The film carries a unique look and style, that has never been done before. It combines the analog art of watercolour painting with the digital art of 3D animation and VFX. We used hand-painted paintings and implemented them in our cg world. For more detailed information on the process and story of this beautiful film, you can find all this information in the Longing's entry for Film of the Year (3D Animation). Below I have highlighted some of my favourite stills from the film and my main contribution. Which is supervising, texturing and lighting.

SCULPTING AND TEXTURING FOR 'EXOLVO'

For the short 3D animation film 'Exolvo' I modelled, sculpted and textured one of the main characters, the King. I also made his throne, but for that just the model. I made the base models in Maya and then sculpted the details and finer shapes in Z-brush. The King's beard was made in Z-brush as well and then rendered in Houdini using the Arnold render engine. In addition to this, I did the lighting for one of the main scenes of the film and the King.

TEXTURING FOR 'PARA'

For a third year film at the Netherlands Film Academy I textured one of the main characters. The character was painted on a wall and in the film she emerged from the wall, with paint still stuck to her skin. I challenged myself by creating a complex normal and displacement map in substance painter, to create this unique look and texturing style.
