3D Character Human Mule - Dat Matthias Nguyen
This is the first of my 3 projects for this contest, a human mule. I find it very interesting how people in the past could transport heavy things from one location to the other. And even more interesting when old people can do it. It's all about technique.
Hey guys, my name is Dat Matthias Nguyen and this is my entry for the Rookies 2021 in the game development category. I have graduated from PIXLVISN media arts academy in Cologne successfully at the end of April. I enter the contest with 3 projects in total as my first step to connect to the industry, receive feedback, and challenge myself.
I'm very excited to present all of my works and I wish all other contenders that have entered the contest the best of luck!
For this project, I wanted to do an old male human as a human mule. This is also my first of the 3 projects I made for the contest. The idea was to make every single project different from each other to maximize the learning experience.
Different hair techniques
I created the hair for each of the 3 characters with a different technique. For this old man, I used Xgen only. For the space ape character, I placed the hair cards one by one. And for the female character, I combined those 2 techniques by creating the main shape of the hair with Xgen first and then transformed the interactive groom into hair cards.
I came to the conclusion, that for games, placing the hair cards manually would give me a much cleaner result, but it would take way longer. For movies, I would go with Xgen, which I love because it's so easy and fast to use.
I consider this as the weakest of my 3 projects because it was the first I did. I could have done the textures more realistic, but I didn't have the knowledge at this time. But I have learned a lot from this project.
I gathered many references of old Asian villagers carrying things. I took the cloth they were wearing as inspiration.
Render: I rendered this character in Maya with VRay unlike the other 2 characters, which I rendered with Unreal Engine 4.
Growth: The favorite technical thing I have learned from this project was using XGen. It's very fun to create hair that way.
But the most important thing I got from this project was personal growth. In my opinion, learning the skill is the minimum an artist should do. But what makes an artist a good artist, is how to communicate and how to handle criticism. I know, that I will never know everything, but I give my best to know the most and become the best possible version of myself.
