Showcase of works 2020-2021
This is a selection of works made during my studies in the past year.
Leica M3
The theme for this assignment was optics, so with me being a big fan of photography I started looking through pictures of old cameras and when I stumbled upon the limited edition of Leica in black and brass I new I had to make that.
I tried my best to replicate as many of the interesting details from the original. The way the paint flakes, the different metals, the worn out leather and I even researched the types of fonts used for the text and numbers on Leica cameras. The font was sadly not publicly available but it lead me to find a really similar font.
I am happy how this project turned out and it taught me quite a bit about substance painter along the way.
A mercenary Rifle
A Rifle, based on a concept by Fernando Correa. This was a challenging exercise for me because the assignment called for a realistic result but it is based on a fairly stylized concept. So the main difficulty was finding a balance between staying faithful to the concept and making a somewhat believable Rifle.
Real-time environment: A giant rests
This was part of a level decoration course and the theme for this assignment was Ruins
This environment was made in UE4 using megascans and it also features a sand material I made in substance designer.
One of the main thing I learned while working on this is the importance of having a clear idea I mind before starting on these kinds of projects. I kind of had to brute force my way into finding a composition I liked by iterating a lot inside of unreal engine. It would have saved me a lot of time if I had made a rough sketch or more extensive research at the start.
But as this was the first real-time environment I ever made I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
Real-time ArchViz: kitchen
When looking for inspiration for this assignment I found a picture of a kitchen only lit by late afternoon sun which give it a really warm feeling. So I tried my best to recreate the same mood in my environment.
The main challenges were the light baking and finding the right props for the environment. In hindsight I honestly think I would've saved some time if I had modeled more props instead of looking for the best most fitting and free props available online.
Materials made in substance designer for this scene:
Musical game: Color Comets
I made this game in the context of my level scripting course. The assignment was to make a complete game inside of unreal engine 4 by using blueprints.
If you want to give it a try you can download it here.
I learned a lot in the process of making this small game. I had to find out how to read midi files inside of unreal engine and I had a look at synthesizers and samplers inside of unreal engine.
I also had much fun polishing the game and making it come to life with particle effects and other tricks.
