Here is my submission for the Rookies 2021. I hope to one day become a professional illustrator or concept artist. I have a long way to go.
Here are some initial ideas for character designs I had very early in the semester, I had been studying a of fighting game concept art (particularly samurai showdown and street fighter) and wanted to channel that into these characters.
Unfortunately I didn't follow through with this idea, but I think that was for the best since looking back, I don't really like them.
After doing more and more studies, practicing my fundamentals and trying to push my design language I came up with the following characters.
These felt a lot more solid and more like they fit the world I had envisioned.
They still have a bit of cleaning up to go through and I'd like to push some shapes even further, but these are a solid step up from the previous designs, I hope.
Figuring out values and composition, trying to incorporate the characters I've designed into more finished pieces. Colour is something I really need to get my head around, its something I will be committing many hours over the next year to understanding.
In order to figure out the lighting for this piece I did look at a lot of noir film lighting and did a little study to truly grasp it.
This year I've really felt the impact of studies and plan to incorporate them into my daily drawing routine.
I spent a lot of my time doing artist studies, in particular, Yoshitaka Amano. I can remember as a kid seeing his art on a Final Fantasy poster and being so enamoured with it, he is one of my biggest inspirations and I wanted to figure out why I loved his art so much.
I did most of these in a sketchbook, I've been loving traditional mediums this year and just trying to work on fundamental drawing skills. Trying to improve my observational skills and develop an understanding of what it is I want to draw.
Its been a long journey of self discovery and while its a little late to have this moment in my third year, I feel its an important step in order to achieve my goals.
I have a long way to go on my journey, I feel like I've only just taken the first step on a very long road.
I'm very excited to strive and grind for improvement and welcome any feedback or critique people have.
