Tree Spirit (Kodama) Design for Yomi: Unbroken

"Kodama" in Japanese mythology are spirits that inhabit or embody trees. As part of a recent university game jam project that was set in Yomi-no-Kuni (the Shinto underworld), I designed a kodama that was meant to advise the player on how to navigate the strange place they found themselves in.

Model Sheet for the kodama. I drew on features of both dragons and tigers, referencing edo-era art styles and design motifs. Although it did not end up getting used in game due to time constraints, I had a lot of fun designing it.

A level mock-up featuring the kodama, surrounded by glowing pink light and iconic cherry blossom trees. This was created by painting over an Unreal Engine 4 screenshot.

The player character was designed by Spencer Lancaster, and you can find their Artstation here.

Here is a link to Yomi: Unbroken, the game that this kodama design was supposed to be in. I also had a hand in creating the partner character, the skybox, level design and designing some generic props.

One of our developers, Jan KarmaƄski has uploaded the game as part of his entry, which you can find here. Please check it out to see the result of our collaborative efforts!
