Steel Wire Rope Snapping (FX)

by CharlesKim on 31 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

Hi everyone! My name is Charles Kim and this is my FX shot that I have been working on for the past 12 weeks at Rising Sun Pictures 'Dynamic Effects and Lighting' course.

This FX shot was created during my studies at Rising Sun Pictures 'Dynamic Effects and Lighting' course.

Using Houdini, Nuke and Substance Painter, I created a steel wire rope snapping due to tension.

To create this shot, I began by procedurally modelling the rope with vex, then boolean fracturing the centre of the rope, and then simulating the tearing and breaking effect with vellum. I then added dust and sparks to make the snapping effect more impactful. From here, I look developed the steel wire rope and composited all the elements together to create the final shot.
