A tech-art and VFX project using Unreal, it's Niagara VFX system, and Houdini to create a fun and friendly neon-sign-shattering experience.

SURGE 3D is a remake a 2D game project from 2 years ago.

I took on the VFX and tech art. I wanted to explore Unreal's Niagara particle system and Houdini's destruction tools and take the overloading neon sign concept to the next level.

I created a basic skybox, buildings, and lighting system in Unreal to populate the background and form the bones of the game-space.

For the neon signs, I set up a basic animation for Niagara particle emitters to follow, and created 3 particle types to build the effect.

For the string lights I used Houdini to simulate the shatter for 3 bulb types, a sphere, a cylinder, and a star.

For the character, the fallen star Bopp, I kept things simple.

The real fun with Bopp was in creating multiple modes for his many power-levels.

The final touch was an atmospheric effect, some simple rain and fog to boost the depth of the city and help reinforce the player's sense of how high up in the city they are.
