Journey into the Unknown

by BamboozledTree on 30 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

Hi, I'm Shoong Herng and I am a fan of horror and the macabre. I love to tell stories and concepts through illustrations and I absolutely enjoy the process of world building. My goal is to one day be able to see the worlds that I have created inspire others just like how I was inspired when I was a kid.

Fascination for the Horror and Bizzare

There is something riveting and alluring about the horror genre for me, which is why I love watching horror movies so much. The thrill, the suspense, the emotion and the nostalgia of me watching them ever since I was a kid have inspired me to implement elements from the horror genre into my works, even if it’s just for a simple portrait study.

Exploring the Unknown

As a beginner artist, I’m always trying out new styles and new workflows to complete an illustration. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t but that’s the whole point of exploration isn’t it? To find out what works and what doesn’t so that our future works would be better. These are two of my illustrations that I’ve done in my early years in two very different methods.

The Origin

Towards my final year in The One Academy we had a team project where we had to create concepts for a fictional world that we created as a team and this world is in a post apocalyptic, sci-fi, desert, African setting. We took inspiration from different games and movies such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Nausicaa and The Valley of Wind, Black Panther and Mad Maxx for our art direction. We also drew inspirations from different African cultures and art deco as the design elements for our concepts.

The backstory for this world is that there used to be a civilization where Gods coexisted with mankind in the form of machines, helping out humans and protecting them as they live together in harmony until an evil force corrupted the machined Gods causing them to be violent against humans. In this story, there are a few key characters and the way our team split the workload is that we each get assigned a character and we were supposed to come up with the concept design for the things that are related to our characters. For example, I was assigned to design the Shaman and I had to come up with the concepts that are related to the Shaman’s such as her prop, her vehicle, her familiar and even the village temple that she is responsible for.
