Hello!

Thank you for visiting my entry page! I am Wil Johnson, an aspiring environment artist who graduated from the University of Hertfordshire's MA course in Games Art and Design in 2020. Below is a collection of work that I have completed since last year's Rookies, including my final major project for my master's and multiple personal development projects I have undertaken whilst looking to find a role within the industry.

For more information, please find my portfolio at https://www.artstation.com/geimund

Breslauer Weather Station - Snowpiercer

This is a month long project that I undertook for this year's Rookies competition. The environment is inspired by the Breslauer Weather Station in Netflix's adaptation of Snowpiercer. The setting of the series is a world which has frozen over to the point of being uninhabitable outside of the Snowpiercer train and a few other enclosed spaces. The Breslauer Weather Station is one of those spaces. All assets within the environment were modelled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter and Designer, and then composed in Unreal Engine 4. This environment helped me push my hard surface modelling skills, particularly in regard to modern assets as my portfolio generally contained historical environments to this point.

H.M.S. Reprise

My final major project for my master's in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire, from which I graduated last year, was a full galleon environment, complete with interior areas such as a captain's cabin, crew quarters and gundeck. This is the largest environment I have made to date, completed over the course of four months, and was the culmination of all the skills I learned whilst on the course. As before, all assets were modelled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter and Designer, and finally composed in Unreal Engine 4.

Ultramarine Predator Tank

Following my graduation (and whilst looking for a position in the industry), I wanted to keep developing my skills whilst also filling holes in my portfolio. With this asset, I hoped to show that I could create sci fi assets and other vehicles, whilst also displaying my own personal passion for the Warhammer IP. The asset was modelled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 3.

Aged Slate Tile and Cracked Stone Wall Materials

Finally, I wanted to also develop my Substance Designer skills after my graduation. As such, I created the below tileable materials for use within a modular building set. The slate material was first sculpted in Zbrush, maps were then exported out and used as a basis for creating the material in Substance Designer. The stone wall material was created purely in Substance Designer.
