Decaying Fish Time-Lapse Material Made in Substance Designe

by FinnCDSwift on 31 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

A Decaying Dead Fish I made fully inside Substance Designer with time as a parameter I set up controlling the amount of decay to the fish. I used AutoHotkey to automate the process of rendering the frames with the parameter at increasing values using Substance Designers PBR Render Node.

Before starting the project I did this test to see if making a decaying fish with only Substance Designer is something I wanted to do.

The first element of the project I worked on was a vertebra generator to generate the vertebra for the main skeleton. I made it be able to generate I wide range of vertebra with the use of lots of parameters. For each vertebra generator node, I made it where you could plug in the previous vertebra making a string of them.

Next, I focused on making up the rest of the skeleton with the skull and stuff done in a less modular fashion compared to the veterbra.

Following this, I started on the outside of the fish and its decay.

After some refining and setting up the time parameter that controlled various nodes, the height map was pretty much done.

Next, I focused on making the colour, roughness and metallic maps for the fish.

And lastly, I focused on making the mud for the fish to sit in.
