Joel Macnab's Environment Exploration
A collection of work done in the last year of university.
Procedural Island
A Procedural Island with the art style of "Sea of Thieves" by Rare incorporating their iconic simplified art style with the procedural workflow of Houdini.
This is my final year project at university with a focus on the Houdini Engine which was a great opportunity to dig deeper into procedural tools and systems.
The idea behind the project was to be able to create a system in which a variety of different islands could be created with just a few clicks. Much of the island is created through instancing and the procedural generation of assets.
Alleyway - Breakout
This project was created in my 3rd year of university and is based on "Tom Clancy the Division" by Ubisoft. It is an alleyway scene with focus on the aftermath of a pandemic. The first scene shown below is the very start and the scene after is the overgrown version once nature has taken back the city.
Alleyway - Overgrown
Seer Hut
A recreation of Volva’s Hut from "Assassins Creed Valhalla" by Ubisoft. Taking reference from "Wayne Yan" "Assassin's Creed Valhalla - Volva’s Hut" and "Jennie Goggin" "Assassin's Creed Valhalla // Valka's hut".
This was a project in my 3rd year of university to create a scene to constraints set out by an art test created by myself.
Procedural Mountain Range
This project was done in the first semester of my third year at university, it is a procedural mountain range loosely based on Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands. This is my first project using the Houdini Engine as the foundation for the entire project.
Inspired by "Ghost Recon Wildlands Terrain Tools and Technology" GDC talk by Guillaume Werle and Benoit Martinez.
I found Indie Pixel and the Sidefx tutorials to be very useful in the basic foundation for many of the tools.
Lockdown
A fun project done over christmas break for the "Search for a Star" competition held by Grads in Games .
Stylized Environment portraying the mood of isolation. Taking inspiration from "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and "Sea of Thieves".
