The Sundaze Collection: Soft Intentions
Exhibition Design for Lucy & Yak x teamLAB
An exhibition space is designed for Lucy & Yak, an independent ethical and sustainable clothing brand based in England with the use of teamLab’s projection mapping software for interactive experiences. Lucy & Yak are well known for their funky handmade indie unisex dungarees, colourful theme and comfortable fits. By working with organic and recycled materials in over 95% of their range, Lucy & Yak are gradually reducing their already low environmental impact. They take pride in being GOTS certified in most of their factories, living wage certified across the business and having a factory in India that runs on renewable energy by using solar panels. Their goal is to prove that making fun apparels while being ethical and sustainable is attainable as well as leaving a positive trail for all life. The 4144 square feet exhibition space is located at The Bindery, APW Bangsar.
Concept Statement
Abstraction, layer and transparency are selected as the keywords. Abstraction is derived from Lucy & Yak’s print and pattern designs, which are mostly free flowing abstract art. For this concept, the 'Skyline Print’ by Elspeth from Lucy & Yak is explored and experimented with. The print is featured in their latest Sundaze Collection which will be the theme of this exhibition. The form was inspired by motorways going over mountains, similar to a bird’s eye view of a map, and a topographic form. The form is organic, abstract and full of squiggly edges.
Layer is derived from the method of constructing a topographic model. It is full of layers and contours throughout that shows the depth and height. In the space, layering different topographic structures will form a series of islands, with the layers highlighted in gradating tones.
Transparency is the last keyword that is based on both the fabric Lucy & Yak used, as well as the brand’s practice on ethics and sustainability. This signifies their transparency and honesty in their business dealings. The space will be semi shaded with materials of varying transparency levels. It will also be used as a translucent screen that serves as a backdrop to teamLab’s projections. It is also used as curtain partitions to emphasis the series of abstract volumes and give a sense of division between different display areas.
