Project Ailee

The Brief

"Ailee is a princess from a secluded aquatic country of Vathys, a country overtaken by a mysterious fog that is unstoppable by any elemental magic that exists in the world. This fog is capable of endlessly producing ruthless shadow monsters out of thin air.

Ailee was born mostly powerless. Her magical ability was very weak from birth and coming from royal blood, she was shunned by most people due to her lack of talents. When the haze took over, The king on his last breath, gave Ailee a family heirloom that activated her abilities to destroy the creatures from the fog.

Ailee not being trained in magic, searches for somebody to train her in its ways and help her take her country back from the haze."

Designing Ailee

Ailee's main design inspirations were to make modern fashion blend into a fantasy setting. I tried to make sure that her design lined up with her fun-loving personality whilst keeping the inspirations in mind.

Ailee Illustration

I made these illustration to introduce the characters' personalities and abilities. I kept these intentions in mind when I was deciding on how to approach her character illustration. In her character illustration, I wanted to show off her fun-loving nature as well as her light weapon ability. 

Designing Xiph

Xiph is Ailee's companion and magic mentor. He is a retired swordsman who excels on physical combat despite having enormous magical capabilities due to him being a demon. He decided to help Ailee due to her resembling his daughter that was killed by the fog.

Xiph's original lore initially put him in Ailee's age range but after trying out an older age in his concept, I re-adjusted his lore as I thought it would be more fun to see a father-daughter relationship in the story. From then on, his design came about naturally:

As with Ailee, I tried to keep in mind his more intense personality and show off his fire sword ability 

Animating an Illustration

This was the biggest challenge of the project due to the fact that this was my first time using Spine2d and was still a bit inexperienced with After effects. This was my best attempt at creating a moving illustration.

End of Project

I would say that this was a successful project that allowed me to learn a lot of new skills and polish my current ones. Thank you for taking the time to check my projects and hopefully you'll look forward to my future projects as well!
