Amaniel, The lost Soul

by RexLee on 25 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

Amaniel is my own creation, a fictional character. After being cast away from her heavenly home for a sin she never commits, Amaniel roamed the Amazon habitat with a grudge which was soon dispelled by the friendly Amazons who brought her into the family, taught her to love once again despite her mounstrous appearance.

This was initially a 5 week project to test out Al shader in Maya. But I wanted to create something of my own from scratch, I wanted to challenge my first character lookdev project. I started collecting references and build up a backstory for my own character, Amaniel. Briefly, she was a goddess cast away from her heavenly home for a sin she never commit, she was frustrated in the first few decades, roaming around the amazon forest and slowly turned into a monstrous creature, but the Amazon warriors took her in, taught her to let go of the grudge, to love and made her one of their family. Amaniel finally found her purpose of life as a guardian for her family of Amazon sisters. However, until today she still wish to return to her heavenly home, not for revenge instead she just wanted an explanation of Father's descision. In this project, I challenge my learning skills by learning retopo, splitting subtools, udims, etc all in a week. In the first week, I sculpted Amaniel in Zbrush, retopo in Maya, UV using udims and made some changes according to my lecturer's feedback. I spend the next 3 weeks texturing and dealing with sss and displacements issues. Because I only can afford a laptop, it was really a difficult process when Substance painter kept crashing. After the fun but difficult 3 weeks, I spent the final week fine tweaking the Al shader settings to bring out the best result in my render and did some compositing work in nukeX, After effects and photoshop after 6 days of rendering. I used some assets from Quixel Megascans for the mini diorama of my character too. I'm really grateful to have Dariush and Kyle helping me during this journey of creating my first own character. I hope I demonstrated some skills that will be able to support seniors in my future career.
