Scanner Helmet - Lachlan Thorpe
Hello, my name is Lachlan Thorpe, I am a 3D modeller living in Melbourne, Australia. Below is the asset I created for the Weta Digital category for this year’s Rookie Awards! The model was built in ZBrush and Maya with a VFX production pipeline in mind and uses SubD and UDIM workflows. Thank you!
Hello and welcome to my submission for the Weta Digital Internship Opportunity!
Built with working in a production environment for film in mind, I modelled this asset in SubD and utilised the UDIM workflow. Additionally, the project is organised so that it is understandable and editable by other artists in a VFX pipeline.
This project was an enjoyable learning experience and developing my skills further at Weta Digital would be a significant opportunity.
I hope you enjoy!

Blocking in Zbrush
To get the general forms and proportions correct, I started by blocking the model in ZBrush. I then took this rough model into Maya where I primarily used it, plus the concept images as a reference point when modelling. Additionally, I used the quad draw tool on some of the more refined forms on the sculpt as a starting point for my SubD mesh.
UV Layout & Scene Organisation
When working in Maya I organised my scene in a way that could be easily understood by other artists in the pipeline. The scene is organised so that the model can be easily mirrored and still maintain the UV layout.
Concept
The concept I chose is the 'scanner helmet' from the Halo franchise created by Kory Lynn Hubbell. When working off the concept art I stuck to the main image I had chosen to reference, rather than using images from in-game and other existing media. I did this to try and emulate how I may receive a concept in a production environment.
Thank you for taking the time to view my submission!
