Concept Art and Illustration - Idea exploration and development
This entry contains a series of shorter projects, through which I have been exploring a series of ideas, from environments to creatures. Some of these are more iterative, while I used others as an opportunity to try spending more time on a more rendered final piece.
The City of Necromancy
This was my most recent project. I used a combination of methods I have been experimenting with lately, including the use of a 3D block-out to make a mood painting. This was after a series of iterative sketches where I came up with my ideas and decided on the core themes and motifs of this concept. I used Maya and Unreal Engine for the 3D modelling.
The Harbinger
This project was one of my personal favourites. I designed a creature with the intent of making something scary and disturbing. Rendering this was a lot of fun. It has been interesting to take concepts a little further by painting more developed versions of them. I also did some exploration into how it moves, and how it would look from certain angles.
The Rebel
This was a shorter project, but I had so much fun using methods I had gotten used to in new ways during the iteration phase. Like a lot of this work, it was very experimental, and I really enjoyed exploring new ideas and learning as I did so. In the final design, I tried to capture her resolute, and strong personality. I would love to explore this character and her world further.
The Sun and Moon
This project was another shorter one. I was less focused on taking a design through to a final render, and more on the iteration and experimentation. I also focused on thematic designs and symbolism. While the Gold and Green designs represent the sun and moon respectively, I also wanted to give them more distinct traits in terms of their strengths. The Gold one features a plume, like a knights helmet, scales which resemble armour, and dragon like wings to show it's power. The Green design on the other hand, is softer, but also more ethereal. I imagine this design would be more magical in nature, and would be much wiser. I tried to communicate this through the use of opalescent colours and softer shapes in contrast. I had a lot of fun playing with this concept, and would love to take it further with some more explorative sheets.
