I'm glad to share my entry for the 2021 Rookies, focusing on concept art and character design !
Hi, I'm Mélisande !
I'm really happy to share with you my ideas and stories with the characters I created, I hope you will enjoy the journey as much as I did
For this project, I wanted to challenge myself and not create a main hero/character but rather a Npc for a rpg-like game, trying to change up the traditionnal merchant archetype while still offering an inspiring story and a caractere of his own. I got inspired by a variety of cultures and had a great time doing researches on them !
I wanted to explore different shapes from the beginning while keeping my main themes : adventurer/solitary/ hunter (of something). the 3rd proposition is close to what almeis'an looked like when he was human.
On the 2nd round I went for the "cursed adventurer/ treasure/artifact hunter" theme. I wanted to explore a more monstruous aspect but in the end I didnt wanted the player to feel threatened by him and made him more "appealing" on the outside only.
I had too much fun doing this, but I truly felt like hospitality was an important aspect of my character regarding this last panel (and props design is essential for an artifact trader after all !)
Erythie is a Lunar nymph, appearing when the night falls to take care of her blossoms and watching the stars until dawn ! I went for a more fast paced character design, with focused themes such as fantasy/night/lunar/poison but I didn't want it to be overly stern or tormented!
She takes great care of her ceremonial scythe and likes to pick her flowers with it to ornate herself with ! She loves their colors and delicate appearence, oblivious to their unforgiving effect on mortals.
Erythie is a cheerful and youthful nymph, I imagined her longing for friendship with humans despite it being impossible. I tried to picture her caractere on these sketches !
Kaya is my "oldest" project here, the one I used to apply for my Riotgames internship. I wanted to follow as closely as possible the constraints that goes for League's character design while creating a character that meant a lot to me !
The urns she carries with her, actually each spirit comes from different parts of Runeterra she purified and kept while traveling ! I really wanted their designs to reflect that !
Feng's 2 layers of outfit ! The first layer is her casual clothing that she wears regularly outside, hiding her "work" outfit underneath it ! I tried to make some interesting contrast with the shape/color/theme
Her gun uses a powerful stolen technology and her short blade is something more conventional, she likes to decorate it with stickers and goodies from ancient forgoten animes like the nerd she is.
Some quick messy sketches to find some interesting fashion designs, though it was limited due to the overall shape being already determined (reworked character)
Feng is the right arm of a powerful asian mafia in a near futur and hides her identity/occupation; I had fun making those 2 outfits accordingly and do something different from what I usually do with some streetwear or regular non fantasy fashion ! As this project is a rework of an old character I created 2 years ago, the process was different from usual but I learned a lot stepping out of my comfort zone !
