It's A Match

Cupid and YueLao realise they were assigned to find a partner for the same person, a shy and socially withdrawn mixed-race girl, which means one of them will fail to fulfil their task. They soon realise they are able to cancel out each other’s power. A race of finding the girl a partner has begun. 

夢貘 | Chime

Chime is a group project I worked on during my third year in college. It's a story about a demotivated Dreamcatcher rediscovers his purpose while attempting to protect the young dreamer during an unexpected encounter.

Here's the colour script I've done for the group project. 

The story is set in a Hong Kong apartment. The paintings show the mood changes throughout the short film. After the magical explosion, the room changes from a cooler tone to a softer and more pastel tone.

Time to Go

A young Tibetan girl who is in search for her missing father inside a spiritual cave discovers something else lurking deep within. Them together with the other miners have to work together to escape before it is too late.

Concept Design

The story is set during World War II but it is not related or based on the authentic World World II that we know in history. After a small country called Shan Yu conquered Tibet, they discover a very powerful mineral, Kha, which can provide enormous amounts of energy. This allows them to strengthen their armed forces and conquer more countries to expand their territory. The General is tasked to lead the Tibetan people to extract Kha in Mandala Cave.

The cool grey of the costume is establishing as the colour of the military for this project.

There are three types of Khyi creatures, the carrier, the climber and the offerer. They are possessed and controlled by Btsun Mo, the guardian of the Mandala Cave. Each of them have their own specific task of collecting and feeding Btsun Mo.

The challenge of designing C8 LOTUS was to create a bomb that can be use as explosive in mining but also able to create a bigger explosion during the climax of the story. So the solution is to create a bomb that can be combined to create a bigger explosion. The final design is inspired by M7 Spider and stackable grenades. The bombs are kept in a bomb holder, it is designed with a handle so it is easier to carry around. A bigger explosion can be created by connecting the detonator to a fully opened C8 LOTUS.

The design of the elevator cannot be too complicated because it has to be built in a short time to speed up the operation. The entrance of the cave will disappear in a month after fully covered by the roots of the Mandala Tree. 

Even though Ikki's family is not rich but they are living a better life compared to a lot of the families in that area. Their house is considered quite big and they are able to afford a television during that era.

Poster and Key Arts

Ikki leaves the cave with her fathers helmet. She lost her father after that night's incident.

This is a scene after she comes out from the cave. The shape of the tree forms the silhouette of her father and his helmet. It is to show that her father protected her and make sure she comes out safely. The sunrise symbolises the danger is over.

The Arrival

Ikki reaches the lake and see the Mandala Tree located in the middle of the lake. Ikki realises there's an entrance at the bottom of the tree as there's light coming from there.

The Sacrifice

Ikki's father triggers the explosion so that Btsun Mo can't get to Ikki and the miners who are still trying to escape from the cave.

The Hidden Cave

Two travellers who love to explore historical sites discover a hidden cave in the mountain when they are hiking around that area.

The concept of this environment is inspired by one of the location (花果山水帘洞)  from The Journey to the West. I tried to show the whole environment through the sketches, from the entrance of the cave in the mountain to the secret hideout of the monkeys. The chosen concept is the secret hideout of the monkeys that is located behind the temple.

These environment concepts were executed using a mixture of 3D and photobash techniques.

Finally, this is a personal project that I did during the semester break before the final year of college. It is based on the song 玫瑰与小鹿（Rose and Deer).  I tried to do the project following a proper workflow, from rough sketches all the way to the animated paintings. Even though I encountered a lot of obstacles and didn't get to fully finish the project, I've learned a lot about what to prioritise at each stage to make sure I can proceed smoothly into the next stage. These knowledges have been very useful for me when I was handling group projects in the final year.
