Cave in the Forest Cemetery
This is what I submitted for my final year doing Games Production (Bsc) 3D Workflows Module at Nottingham Trent University (Confetti Institute). The brief set was to choose a local area in Nottingham, recreate it but stylise it in one of 3 themes; Vigilante, Cyberpunk or Japanese Mythology.
I selected my local Church Rock Cemetery to recreate, with the Japanese Mythology theme as it's what I enjoy, so I chose to go for a Mysterious yet Magical mood. This is basically my first completed environment, at least as a University assignment submision - will be changed drastically into 2 seperate smaller scenes.
Turning the local Church Rock Cemetery layout (hence the Christian crosses in an early blockout) but using Japanese replacements and adding extra features like the lanterns, resulted in total loss of cohesion and limited composition due to the brief.
However, I chose this place over any other building/area because I wanted to learn how to create a landscape envrionment and I found the cave beautiful and inspirational. My goals included learning landscapes, UE4 and learning sculpting for envrionments, although just started learning sculpting. Here are some render breakdowns of assets used in the scene.
Megascans were used for foliage, landscape textures, wall asset and cave texture.
Future Plans
Going forward, I will carry on working on the cave area, sculpting it and turning it into a more focused and interesting diorama, with better cohesion and composition. One of my references included a forest path with lanterns and a Torii gate, so I will also recreate this so that I can work from a concept and learn foliage, while improving existing assets in the process.
I have other ideas for environments, but those will wait until the time is right and will remain a secret for now!
