Synopsis

Ignite the courage within.

As a fire rages through the Australian bushland, a baby wombat finds herself separated from her family and the safety of their burrow. While threatened by a terrifying fire spirit, she finds her inner courage - guided by the spirit of the now extinct Tasmanian Tiger.

The Story Behind 'Spirit'

After witnessing the devastation of the deadly bushfires that ravaged Australia at the start of 2020, the Master of Animation and Visualisation students felt compelled to create a story showing the impact of bushfires not only on the land itself, but to those that call it home.

We wanted the project to be iconically Australian, inspired by local flora, fauna, colours and sounds. However, to do this with sensitivity and cultural awareness, we also wanted to acknowledge the art and stories of the First Nations peoples.

As part of our project development we were fortunate to meet with Indigenous leaders and artists, including UTS Elder Aunty Glendra Stubbs, Wiradjuri artist Graham Davis King and the Northern Territory artist Kathleen Buzzacott, who mentored us through their shared stories and helped guide us through the Indigenous story and design elements of the project.

With their support and encouragement, we were able to work as a collaborative team to combine our creative talent, technical expertise and passion to see our short film come to life. In the end the project not only empowered us as individual artists, but created an understanding of the potential of working together on something larger than any one of us could have achieved alone.

Meet The Team

As the collaborative group project from the Master of Animation and Visualisation students at the UTS Animal Logic Academy, the 3D animated short film 'Spirit' has been developed from the story idea, through all stages of production by the student group under the guidance of the team of Leads who direct and supervise the development and production of the project.
