The portfolio of a first year student

by malinwendel on 17 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

A year ago I had never opened a 3D program, two school semesters later and this is where I am now! In this entry I showcase the school projects I am the most proud of.

From drawing to image

School project. I got architectural drawings of a house and the brief was to follow the drawings and create an image that would be suitable for a property brochure. It had to be a sunny, daylight image.

Software used: 3Ds Max, Vray, RailClone, ForestPack, Photoshop

I had some time left before deadline and wanted to try out making snow. I googled how to make snow texture and watched youtube videos on how to create snow in 3D. Then I just tried and retried a bunch of different things. 15 hours later I had reached deadline and this was the end result. I tried making it look like a part of the ground had been walked on but you can't really see the footprints. When I have time over I will definitely try this again and I will probably photoshop a lot more of the snow.

Modeling

Next is a chair modeling assignment. Required: 2 images (one studio, one environment) suitable to use for commercial purposes on a website or in a magazine. On one of the images I had to incorporate the name and designer of the chair.

I had some extra time over so I also rendered an image to show the details.

Software used: 3Ds Max, Corona, Photoshop

Renovation

First big assignment I did at school. The brief was to find an apartment for sale that would benefit from an uplift and renovate it with a specific target group in mind.

Software used: 3Ds Max, Corona, Photoshop

The kitchen is modeled by me. The furniture and appliances are not

Target group: Couple, no kids.

I often choose to make my moodboards very simple to avoid that the client focuses on the wrong things. "What you see is what you get". No misunderstandings.

Urban Architecture // Bellevue

This was a collaboration my class did with Motiv Studios and NBBJ. We got a 3D model from Motiv and files with information about the site, what types of materials that the building should have and examples of landscaping from the architect.

The brief was to come up with a concept that suits the place and building.

Software used: 3Ds Max, Vray, Photoshop

I used bercontile and my own photographs for the bricks

On the camera correction meeting I briefly said what I had in mind for the concept and we decided that the 3rd angle would be best suitable for my idea. Here you can also see what the model looked like when I first got it

With this project and concept I wanted to focus on the local community. I feel like a lot of times when a new building is being built many people get anxious whether or not the new building will fit in at that spot or if it will take up to much space etc. I wanted to show the locals that the building would not be a distraction or in the way, the art fair would still be able to take place.

Most of the people in this image are photographed by Kevin Rubin

Hotel Restaurant

This was a group project where the brief was to come up with a concept for an imaginary hotel located at a given place. My group and I got North Island, New Zealand as the location for our hotel. We all had to make one room each but they had to have a uniform look as if they were made by the same person.

Software used: 3Ds Max, Corona, Photoshop

I have modelled the bar, mountain wall, tables, benches and sofa myself. The rest is downloaded. On the bar stools I only had to change the mapping and texturing but the dining chairs had some problems with the armrest and seat so I remodeled those.

Here you can see all of our images together. Philippa Petrén Stockhaus made the lobby and Klara Johansson made the guest bedroom.
