Lighting for Animation - Two Projects
Hello everyone! I've joined the Academy of Animated Art's "Lighting for Animation" program a few months ago and it is a pleasure to submit to this year's Rookie Awards two projects that I have worked on as part of the program: "Sir Desmodus Rotundus" and "Late Night Tea".
Sir Desmodus Rotundus
I created this little scene using the Victorian kit from KitBash3D and Sir Desmodus Rotundus model from the Academy Of Animated Art. The main goal was to practice lighting and compositing for animation. As all the models were provided with textures, I could use these to build the shaders and only had to do a few tweaks here and there to adjust them to the specific needs of the scene. I also have to mention the great feedback rounds received from Michael Tanzilllo that helped me immensely to spot some issues and to improve the final result of the piece.
Original character concept by Chris Ayers
Character modelled by Sara Tarr
Background models from KitBash3D
These were my main references for the project: The Alienist | Ratatouille | Sara Tarr's original render from Sir Desmodus Rotundus | Bat picture
Late Night Tea
I relighted this scene as part of the Redshift workshop from the Academy of Animated Art. My reference for the lighting was a scene from the movie Up (2009). It was my first time using Redshift. Before that, I had only used Arnold for lighting and rendering.
Most of the CG models and the lookdev were done by Shane Sternstein for his take on this scene, which can be seen below. And I added and/or rearranged a few other objects as needed for my take.
Shane Sternstein's original scene based on a concept design by Mike Redman. And my reference for the relighting: a scene from the film Up (Pixar, 2009).
