Visual Effects – Rising Sun Pictures and University of South Australia Winner
Emma Wittwer

I’m Emma, a chef turned digital artist. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to step away from cooking which I loved. I took a course in Computer Programing and decided that although it was fun, it wasn’t for me. While I was studying that, I discovered that I could create art on computers and my mind was blown! I then spent two years studying an Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialising in Game Art) at TAFE SA.

Digital Illustration – CDW Studios and Flinders University Winner
Georg Uebler

Since I originally wanted to study 2D Illustration I got suprised when the day I had to build a simple room with my name on a wall as our first exercise in a CGI course that I didn´t even want to take at first, I realized that this is going to be what I want to do. When I had my internship in London at a medium sized advertising studio it was the final proof I needed that this is the field I want to work later on. (not advertising in particular)

Digital Illustration – New3dge Winner
Aly Farroukh

I’ve been drawing and watching movies for as long as i can remember, and I’ve been fascinated by it ever since. The idea of being able to create worlds and bring characters and creatures in them to life was what got me hooked. I remember having a conversation with my friend (also a 3D artist) about CG and modeling, when he agreed to show me some basics, and this is where it all started.

Visual Effects – Lost Boys Studios Winner
Karlee Hanson

I am currently a graduate student at Savannah College of Art and Design. The decision to go to graduate school was an easy one for me as I knew my undergraduate degree wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to go in life. I knew I wanted to get into some kind of entertainment career since I was a teenager. I grew up in a small town of only one-thousand people, but growing up my dad and I would have movie nights; watching many great classics and new releases. This got me to admire the film industry and hope to one day to be apart of it.

I’ve had an eclectic career working in 3D since 1996 when I picked up software I don’t even know of the name of anymore.. When Softimage was released I fell for 3D and haven’t looked back. I have worked on TV, and games, new media, but never in films. My goal is to work on characters and sets for feature animation.

Four month Foundation Scholarship to Think Tank Online

I got a little bit of a late start on the art path but I grew up a fan of all things syfy and fantasy. Playing DND in the 90’s made me want to be an illustrator but my path meandered here and there until five years ago when i decided to focus on art as a career. Watching tutorials and doing a little internet searching eventually had me moving out to Los Angeles for school. I have attended Brainstorm for about 2 years along with some online classes.

Visual Effects – Vancouver Film School Winner
Sherryn Pattarawuttiwong

On my 12th birthday, my parents bought me my first tablet pen. On weekdays after school, I’d go home and draw until the sun came up. On weekends, we’d go out to the movies when the sun went down. I knew every moment that I wanted to go into the arts. However, it was the moment of awe I felt leaving the theatre after seeing Iron Man and Avatar that brought upon the very possible reality of this dream that I could combine all my favorite forms of art. My greatest pleasure would be my involvement in the films and games which inspire others as they did in my childhood.

Visual Effects – CG Spectrum Winner
Benjamin Thomas

My name is Benjamin Thomas, born in Bolivia and moved to Sydney, Australia in 1996 at the age of 3. I remember as far back as I can watching cartoons as a little kid laughing at Scooby Doo or watching Pokemon that i wanted to always emulate what was on the screen. For me that would be to draw what I see, therefore I spent years drawing every chance I had from basic cartoons to anime such as Dragon Ball Z and Digimon to learning about the human anatomy.

John Olofinskiy

I clearly remember the day when I watched my first animated motion picture “Aladdin” by Walt Disney. This was like a magic to me as I saw things that I could never have seen in real life, and being a kid I realized that my passion lies in creating magic on the screen. However, under some circumstances, I became a Civil Engineer and spent some years drawing engineering content, but I was always dreaming about getting into VFX Industry.

Last year I was awarded with a scholarship to study the art of Visual Effects and Compositing with CG Spectrum. I was fortunate enough to be taught and mentored by someone within the industry, who also worked on a number of feature films throughout the year. Throughout the course I completed three projects all of which can be viewed here. Each project tested different skills and techniques within Nuke. With all material being sourced by myself.

Storytelling is something very important to me; it’s helped me through two decades of unfortunate circumstances, given me things to look forward to in the form of games, movies, books, and provided an outlet that I myself can take part in. Art wasn’t always something I was very good at, but telling stories was. I wrote all sorts of different adventures and came up with characters that only existed in written words or imagination. But – not long before I was to graduate high school as a below average, passing grade student – I stumbled upon my first look at real concept art, and from there my imagination began to take form.

The one thing that held me back from joining the industry was knowledge, I did not know where or how to get involved except youtube, but that was not enough. In 2016 I found out that it was possible for me to study online and get into the industry I really wanted. Since then I have done one semester of 3D movie production before I changed over to Interactive Media, where I want to learn more about most aspects of the industry but at the same time specialise in one field, which is visual effects.

Vincenzo Bufalino

Since I was about 10 years old, I’ve always wanted to work in the visual effects industry. This has been my dream from day one. After watching, ‘The Secret World of Alex Mack’ in the 90’s there was something about the idea of having superpowers that made me wish they could be real, as any kid would fantasise about. There is a sense of anything is possible and freedom of creativity. This moment kick-started my fascination with any movie that involved visual effects. I remember my dad would take me to the local video store on a Friday night in and would allow me to hire movies, it was my thing and what I enjoyed to do on most weekends. Getting lost in the stories and worlds that weren’t real, however, VFX brings us as close as we can get to reality.
