Games Art

If you want to create the amazing visual elements that are seen in games, our Games Art degree will provide you with the skills you need for a career as a 3D artist.

Throughout the course, you will study 3D modelling, digital sculpting, texturing, observational drawing and character design. You will also learn how to art direct your work as you apply the fundamentals of Art and Design theory to your coursework and skill development. Developing your own artistic workflow in the creation of your career portfolio is highly encouraged and supported during your study.

As the largest games department in the UK, we have lots of industry contacts, including Flix Interactive, Sumo Digital, Rebellion, Rockstar, Ubisoft, Cloud Imperium Games and Playground Games. It means you’ll graduate work-ready, with connections and an impressive portfolio.

Concept Art for Games and Film

This degree is designed to prepare you for working within the thrilling and rapidly advancing entertainment industry. It’s perfect if you wish to mix the artistic, creative and technical skills required to be a 2D or concept artist in either the games or film industry.

Our academics are experts in painting, life drawing, digital sculpting, 3D modelling, animation, lighting and rendering, digital compositing, digital painting, games scripting, motion capture, cinematography and post-production.

As members of the games industry body TIGA, we provide access to some of the latest technology in game art development. You will use our purpose-built HD TV studio, green screen studios, post-production suites, state-of-the-art digital cinema cameras, HD cameras, motion capture studio, Unreal games engines, and Wacom graphic tablets.

Games Programming

As members of the PlayStation®️ First Academic Program run by Sony, we have access to professional development hardware and software tools. Our labs will help you to develop for multiple platforms, including consoles, phones, tablets and PCs. We also have a usability lab for testing how people interact with games. Staffordshire University is also a member of TIGA, the games industry body, which demonstrates the course adheres to industry requirements.

Our academics have experience in the industry and are engaged in research, so course content is always relevant. You’ll also get to hear our guest speakers discuss cutting-edge game development tools and processes.

Computer Games Development

Are you a keen programmer who wants to learn about games development in general, as well as technical games programming skills? This course is suited to those who aspire to work in an indie games studio or develop mobile games, and is also good preparation for a career as a software developer in the wider computing industry.

As members of the PlayStation®️ First Academic Program run by Sony, we have access to professional development hardware and software tools. Using industry standard games engines such as UE4 and Unity, you’ll gain experience in developing games from an initial concept to finished product. You will have the opportunity to pitch your games to commercial studios, which have included Playground Games, Ubisoft, Codemasters, Team 17 and Media Molecule in recent years.

Computer Games Design

Our Computer Games Design degree explores the creative and technical aspects of games production, giving you the necessary skills to develop, produce and publish games titles.

This course is accredited by the industry games body TIGA, and will give you the skills to become a 3D artist, animator or games designer. We work closely with industry partners to ensure that course content remains relevant, giving our students excellent networking opportunities in the games industry.

Our facilities boast a hi-tech Vicon Motion Capture Studio, a specialist Games Centre, hundreds of PCs and game development possibilities with Sony, Vive, Oculus and more.

Games Design and Programming

As a Computer Games Design and Programming student, you’ll learn how to take your game ideas from concept, through production to final release using industry-standard design and development techniques. You will also learn how to develop or modify the technologies used in game engines.

Run in affiliation with games industry body TIGA, this course will give you the skills you need for a career in games development focused around using multiple games technologies. This course has been designed around the needs of the games industry with the focus on developing skills in design, programming and production.

These three core areas cover many of the job roles advertised by a highly competitive worldwide games industry and allow a graduate to cast a wide net when it comes to applying for a games studio role. This broad skill set also makes graduates from this course ideally suited to joining Indie teams where the need to be flexible in a role is particularly valuable or to independently create their own games.

Computer Games Design and Production

This course was built with the role of a core games designer or gameplay designer in mind. You’ll focus on scripting in game engines to allow you to take ideas from concept to a playable prototype. Exploring some of the fundamental ideas underpinning modern games, you’ll develop fun, exciting and experimental concepts.

Our academics come from a variety of backgrounds, including fine art, games design, interactive media technology, simulation and mathematical modelling, and they have worked in gaming at all levels.

We have a state-of-the-art games design studio and we have excellent links to influential organisations in the industry. You’ll have the opportunity to network with these companies and build contacts for your future career.

Games Design with Animation

Our BSc (Hons) Computer Games Design with Animation degree combines technical and artistic skills, making you highly sought after within the industry. We’ll cover the three main types of games animation – motion capture, hand-keyed animation and technical animation – and will give you the chance to specialise.

You’ll devise 3D character models, get them to move around using body mechanics, and equip them with props, vehicles and weapons. Whether creating a desert, street, castle or spaceship as a backdrop, you’ll also master game environments.

And to ensure your real-time animation models actually work in a games engine, you will study games design and aspects of programming too. As the largest games department in the UK, we have lots of industry contacts, including Flix Interactive, Sumo Digital. It means you’ll graduate work-ready, with connections and an impressive portfolio.
