The School of the Year – Top 20 list was calculated based on the voting of over 1,000 submissions of portfolios from students and recent graduates studying at 216 International schools and training facilities.
Each school was awarded points based on data collected from the performance of submissions from students in four of the main Award categories: Student of the Year – VFX/Animation, Student of the Year – Next-Gen Gaming, Film of the Year, and Game of the Year. The following data was then weighted to give each School their overall score:
- Number of students who entered
- Number of finalists
- Number of Highly Commended
- Number of Runner-Up
- Number of Winners
- Average Rank of Entry per School

Having access to over 1,000 entries ranked from top-to-bottom by industry experts is an extremely powerful indicator of where the best talent is coming from on a global scale
The judging panel – including Academy Awards® winner Joe Letteri from Weta Digital – voted for entries based on criteria including: creative skills, technical skills, presentation, variety of skills, raw talent and future potential.
During the judging process, one of three possible ranks were awarded based on the judges score card entry:
- Slayer (A): Spectacular abilities with amazing skills. Absolutely ready for an industry job.
- Pressed (B) : Hyper-focused on perfecting their solid skills. Very talented and capable.
- Thirsty (C) : Skills not quite perfected yet, some good knowledge and potential.
For each School, the average rank for their students was calculated to give each school their “Average Rank of Students” which is a highly accurate representation of the average skill level for students graduating their courses.

A real highlight for us is seeing the Media Design School, New Zealand, make such a dramatic jump up the ladder from previous years. It’s the first time we have actually seen a school from the Oceania region claim a spot in the list.
Students looking to study Visual Effects, Animation, or Next-Gen Gaming will not go wrong with any of the 20 school programs that made The Rookies ranking lists for 2015. They are all incredible schools and continue to generate and nurture amazing talent.
